In addition to raising alpacas, we lead a 4-H Alpaca Project. That has led us to pursue performance show training. With a background in both halter and performance, we have learned that practice makes perfect!
Alpacas are smart animals and are easily trained to halter and lead. But show training takes more work. There are two keys: consistency and repetition. Both desensitize the alpaca and teach him/her that the things they will encounter won't "eat them".
We teach a combination of Camelid Dynamics techniques and others we have found to work. As with many things, success is dependent on practice. Once you have learned the techniques, practice can be managed in a variety of ways.
